7 STEPS TO IMPROVE YOUR PRACTICAL TECHNIQUE — NO MATTER WHAT POSITION YOU PLAY

Good technique is not about doing impressive tricks.

It is about controlling the ball quickly and effectively when the match is fast and an opponent is close.

Goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, winger or striker — every player needs practical technique.

Here are 7 steps to improve it.

  1. MASTER YOUR FIRST TOUCH

Your first touch should prepare your next action.

Don't simply stop the ball.

Receive it into space.

Away from pressure.

Towards your next pass.

Towards the direction you want to attack.

Train receiving from different angles and with both feet.

  1. USE BOTH FEET EVERY DAY

You don't need two identical feet.

But your weaker foot cannot become an emergency.

Start simple.

50 short passes.

30 longer passes.

20 controlled first touches.

10–20 finishes if appropriate for your position.

Do it regularly.

Your weaker foot should become useful and reliable.

  1. TRAIN PASSING WITH A PURPOSE

Don't just pass against a wall for 30 minutes.

Choose targets.

Change distance.

Change angles.

Use one and two touches.

Receive with one foot and pass with the other.

Count accurate passes.

Example:

Can you hit your target 18 times from 20 attempts?

Measure it and try to improve.

  1. ADD SCANNING TO TECHNICAL TRAINING

Technique starts before the ball reaches you.

Look around.

Where is the space?

Where is the opponent?

Where is your teammate?

Train this habit.

Before receiving the ball, quickly look left and right.

Then receive and immediately make your next action.

SCAN → RECEIVE → DECIDE → PLAY.

  1. INCREASE THE SPEED

If you can perform an exercise perfectly at low speed, make it harder.

Reduce your number of touches.

Increase the pace of the ball.

Reduce the space.

Add movement before receiving.

Set a time limit.

Eventually, your technique must work at MATCH SPEED.

  1. ADD PRESSURE AND DECISIONS

Football is unpredictable.

Your individual training should not always be predictable.

Train with a partner when possible.

Let them give you different signals.

Left or right.

One touch or two.

Pass or turn.

Attack or protect the ball.

Now you are not only practising movement.

You are practising REACTION and DECISION.

  1. TEST IT IN REAL MATCHES

This is the most important step.

Beautiful training videos mean nothing if your technique disappears under pressure.

After every match, ask:

Did my first touch help me?

Did I lose easy balls?

Did I use my weaker foot?

Could I play quickly under pressure?

Which technical mistake happened repeatedly?

Take that problem back to training.

TRAIN → TEST IN MATCH → ANALYSE → CORRECT → TEST AGAIN.

FINAL MESSAGE

Practical technique is not about looking impressive.

It is about being EFFECTIVE.

A defender needs it.

A midfielder needs it.

A winger needs it.

A striker needs it.

Even a goalkeeper needs it.

Start with the basics:

FIRST TOUCH.

BOTH FEET.

ACCURATE PASSING.

SCANNING.

SPEED.

PRESSURE.

MATCH APPLICATION.

Don't practise a skill only until you can do it.

Practise it until you can do it QUICKLY, UNDER PRESSURE AND WHEN IT MATTERS.

That is technique you can actually use.
