Do you dream of becoming a professional footballer? You work on your fitness, develop your technique, and build your mindset? That’s great — but remember, thousands of other young players are doing exactly the same. Which means one thing: you need to have something that most don’t. Something that makes you an added value to the coach and the team.
AVERAGE DOESN’T GET REMEMBERED
In professional football, being “good” is not enough. Coaches look for players who are outstanding in at least one area — those who stand out and can influence the game in a measurable way. You might be a solid central midfielder, but if you don’t have something unique — like exceptional vision, line-breaking passes, ball-winning skills, or leadership — your chances of moving up drastically decrease.
CHOOSE YOUR “SPECIALTY”
You don’t have to be the best at everything. Instead, ask yourself:
What can I truly become exceptional at?
Here are a few examples of qualities that make players stand out:
-
DEADLY SET PIECES – if you can take corners, free kicks or penalties with precision, the coach will always have a reason to pick you.
-
UNMATCHED ENDURANCE AND PRESSING – if you can play at 100% intensity for 90 minutes, you’re perfect for modern high-press football.
-
EXCEPTIONAL LEFT FOOT – quality left-footed players are always in demand.
-
1V1 DOMINANCE – a dribbler who can consistently beat defenders can change the game.
-
ON-FIELD LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNICATION – if you organize the defense or guide teammates, you become the backbone of the team.
STANDING OUT ISN’T LUCK – IT’S STRATEGY
If you want to be great at something, you must intentionally choose your focus and consistently work on it. Standout skills are developed through:
-
deliberate, regular training of a specific game element
-
analyzing your matches and progress
-
understanding your role in the team
-
mastering details that others ignore
Many players train generally. Very few train specifically to become outstanding at something. And those are the ones who get noticed by scouts.
ADDED VALUE IS YOUR TICKET TO THE NEXT LEVEL
Teams and coaches are not only looking for “hard-working players”. They want problem-solvers on the pitch. Game-changers. Players who bring something others don’t.
If you want to go from “talented youth” to “professional”, start by finding and developing your standout trait.
Remember: average doesn’t build careers. Stand out. Find your specialty. Bring added value. And even if you're not yet a complete player, a coach will have a real reason to choose you.
